About the Program

Ray of Hope is excited to announce that they have a three year funding partnership with Service Canada to provide employment training for youth through the Morning Glory Café and Catering.  This renewed 6 month Youth Work Experience Program will focus on young people 15-29 years old that are not in school and features the addition of a dedicated Employment Counsellor, along with introducing external work placements.

Program Intro:

The Youth Work Experience Program is specifically designed to help young people 15-29 years old who are not enrolled in an educational school program and are unemployed or under-employed. Ray of Hope's Youth Employment Training Program, in partnership with Service Canada, has the goal to help these young people receive the employment training, life skills development, and work experience needed for them to make a successful transition to the workforce.

This work experience program is 26 weeks (6 months) in length.  Each youth who participates will work a total of 35 hours per week and will receive the current provincial minimum wage, plus a $500 bonus when they successfully graduate.

The program is divided into three phases:

Phase 1: Employable Skills Workshops

For the first 6 weeks, all participants will participate in training workshops and seminars faciliated by the Employment Counsellor.  These sessions will include an orientation to the program, health & safety training, and several workshops on character development, life skills, health & nutrition, goal setting, resumé writing, and interview skills.  Participants will also work toward earning certifications in First Aid/CPR, Safe Food Handling and Smart Serve Ontario. 

Phase 2: Internal Work Experience

Over the course of the next 10 weeks of the program, participants will be placed in one of two Morning Glory Cafés and at the Catering location.  There they will be trained in the areas of customer service, food prep and baking.  Each Morning Glory location's Supervisor will help train the young person in all three areas, along with participating in ongoing evaluations.

Phase 3: External Work Experience

This phase takes place during the last 10 weeks of the program and involves each participant, through recognizing their personal strengths & career goals, choose the right fit from several external employers for their placement.  Employment placements industries could include food service, retail, warehousing/moving, car detailing, and many more.  There will be ongoing support from the Program Director and Employment Counsellor for both the participants and employer during this time. 

The 2017/2018 program intake dates are: July 24; Sept 25; Nov 27; and Jan 29, 2018.
